Bio

 

Ross Peter Nelson earned his MFA in playwriting from the Creative Writing Workshop at the University of New Orleans. His thesis advisor was Professor Justin Maxwell, and he has studied independently with Amy Freed, Anthony Clarvoe, Bill Cain, and Lauren Gunderson.

 

Ross's most recent piece, How to Poison the President, was produced at the Last Chance New Play Fest in Helena, MT in November 2020. His black comedy on internet surveillance, Becoming Number Six, premiered in New Orleans. Victoria's Secret, a one-act, was selected for the Spokane Playwrights Forum in 2018.

Over two dozen of his short plays have been produced in the US and overseas. Several of his ten-minute works are available from Heartland Plays. Ross was a member of Playground San Francisco, which honored him with their Emerging Playwright Award. The Pear Theatre in Mountain View produced one or more of his pieces for ten consecutive seasons. His ten-minute play, Call Me Comrade, appeared on The Movie Network, an Australian TV channel. Southern Rep has featured his work in their “6x6” short play competition and commissioned his one-act, Zoloft Tango in 2015. Zoloft Tango won the Audience Favorite award at the Spokane Playwrights Forum the following year.

 

In addition to his dramatic work, Ross is the author of prize-winning short fiction and two technical books. He taught undergraduate playwriting at UNO and he is a member of the Dramatists Guild. Ross served as playwright-in-residence at the Can Serrat artists colony in Spain during October 2017.

Ross is an associate producer of the Last Chance New Play Fest, and the president of Raven's Feather Productions.
